Compass Academic Mentoring was developed by Dr. Jennifer Dungy and Dr. Christina DeJong. As colleagues and co-authors, Dr. Dungy and Dr. DeJong have worked together for over 15 years, and are excited to be able to provide student support outside of our academic roles.

Dr. Jennifer E. Dungy
Jennifer E. Dungy is a Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. She is an expert in qualitative methods, and her primary research focuses on public response to police use of force. Her second research area focuses on prisoner reentry and the understanding of recidivism and desistance among recently released female offenders. Finally, she examines how the intersection of race, gender, and neighborhood context shape victimization risks among minority youth. She has published over 80 articles and has been cited over 3,700 times.

Dr. Dungy is the Associate editor for Crime & Delinquency and serves on the editorial board of the scholarly journals Justice QuarterlyCriminology & Public PolicyJournal of Crime & JusticeFeminist Criminology, and Sociology Compass

Dr. Dungy was awarded the 2021 Albert J. Reiss Distinguished Scholarly Publication Awardfrom the American Sociological Association Crime, Law and Deviance section, given in recognition of her book Hands Up, Don’t Shoot: Why the Protests in Ferguson and Baltimore Matter and How They Changed America. She was also the recipient of the 2020 Coramae Richey Mann, which recognizes a scholar who has made outstanding contribution of scholarship on race, crime, & justice.

Dr. Christina DeJong
Dr. Christina DeJong is Associate Professor Emerita in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. She holds degrees in Sociology (University of Texas), Criminology, and Criminal Justice (University of Maryland). As a quantitative researcher, she has used SPSS, Stata, R, and numerous other software programs to conduct analysis.

The main focus of Dr. DeJong’s work is in Queer Criminology. She studies discrimination and victimization of LGBTQIA+ people in the United States. Her recent publications have appeared in the Journal of Homosexuality, Victims & Offenders, The Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Homicide Studies, and Sexuality & Culture.

Dr. DeJong has been recognized for her teaching and mentoring by Michigan State University, MSU’s College of Social Science, and was the 2021 Recipient of the Teaching Award from the American Society of Criminology. She is particularly proud of her recognition as “Inconvenient Woman of the Year” by ASC’s Division of Feminist Criminology in 2018.
